Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
