A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
